L’Oreal Neon Pop Collection Summer 2013

My Monday Morning was brightened up instantly when a big box arrived from L’Oreal! Four beautiful NEW eye catching shades of nail polish and a bright fun Bubble-gum Balloon which matches all four shades of polish!  With the sunshine appearing last week in England I have been opting for bright nails so I was delighted to receive L’Oreal’s NEW Neon Pop collection for the Summer 13, they are full of Tropicana bright colours with inspiration from Lichtenstein’s Colour-Block palette! They look good enough to eat…

There’s 8 colours to collect and a white which they advise to use as a base shade to make the “neon” polishes appear brighter. The colours I have are:

Yellow- Banana Pop 834

Green- Wasabi Hint 833

Pink- Acid Watermelon 827

Purple- Flashing Lilac 828

The L’Oreal Color Riche Neon Pop nail polishes will be available this month in Boots and Superdrug costing around £4.99 each.

No Foundation Foundation with SPF 30!

Foundation and tinted moisturisers are the key to a polished makeup look especially if I am working on a model with perfect skin and I don’t want to ruin their skin with thick coverage. I know a lot of makeup newbies who are scared of looking too made-up and avoid foundation. Gone are the days of heavy, cakey makeup; now brands are focused on natural, effortless finishes that make your skin look its best and I try my best to have a range of types of foundation in my kit to suit all skin types and looks I am aiming to create.

As a dermatologist to some of the most famous faces in the world, their special needs often become inspiration for the creation of new products.  When more than one celebrity make-up artist asked Dr. Perricone for a type of foundation that would let the skin’s natural radiance and beauty shine through, No Foundation Foundation was born from Perricone MD.

Created to keep skin looking dewy and flawless, this unique formula delivers many benefits of a traditional foundation without the heavy matte finish, which emphasizes the tiniest skin imperfections.  No Foundation Foundation is a multi-purpose product that provides natural translucent coverage, corrects skin undertones, instantly smoothes fine lines and boosts skin’s natural moisture throughout the day, all the while delivering antioxidant benefits.

“I took special care in formulating No Foundation Foundation with a non-chemical SPF 30 to deliver protection against sun damage, making it ideal for all skin types, even the most sensitive” – Dr. Perricone

The Benefits of using Foundation No Foundation:

*SPF 30

*Lightweight and suitable for all skin types.

*healthy, dewy finish.

*Corrects skin undertones, smoothes fine lines and boosts skin’s natural moisture.

*Paraben-free.

Unfortunately it only comes in one shade. Women of a wide skintone range could pull this off, but I can imagine those on either end of the spectrum won’t be able to use this product.

It gives you a no foundation look yet protects the skin, has anti-aging benefits and gives a little tint to even out the skintone. Once you conceal and place translucent powder the skin looks glowing and dewy!  I do only use this for clients who have amazing non pigmented skin as it doesn’t really cover imperfections such as redness and pimples. So I would then opt for a thicker foundation if the skin has imperfections. It’s perfect also if you are on holiday or just don’t like the foundation look.

It costs £47 which is very pricey, however comes out for my best make-up jobs and not all models I work on suits this foundation due to their skin types and skin tones so I am happy to only use this foundation on special occasions. Check out the full Perricone MD No Makeup Makeup range >here<

From capturing the moment on her camera to drawing the moment …

Francesca Page is one talented lady. Francesca out of many other creatives had the chance to come along to the last Luke Woodford Abandoned Fashion Series project in the Lake District. Many of you have probably seen the behind the seen images I had took of me at work which I have posted on all my channels and on my blog (not all yet till the final images are published) Francesca took the first image capturing me doing final make-up touch ups on model Rachel Marston on set using my favourite red lipstick- Lime Crime Velvetine.

Francesca will be creating a story board from her experience at the photoshoot and here is one of her first images she has done on me. I love it so much. I can’t wait to see the rest of the final images.

Check out Francesca’s art and photography >here<

Thank you Francesca! It’s one of my favourite things at the moment seeing artists turn my work into their art.

My Pin Curl Hair Tutorial to Get Vintage Waves

For Luke Woodford’s abandoned fashion series project in the Lake District the look I was briefed was vintage make-up and hair which suited the location, styling and concept of the story being created. I get asked a lot how to create this soft natural looking vintage wave and I wanted to share how to create the look on my blog today with these behind the scene pictures the team took of me on the day of the shoot.

If you’re creating your curls using hair rollers or a curling iron then make sure your hair has not been freshly washed and blow dried. Curls will form and hold better in day old hair as your hair will not be soft and slippery.

Products I used:

ghd Air Hairdryer

ghd Ceramic Vented Radial Brush - Size 4

ghd Paddle Brush

Neal and Wolf Guard Heat protection

Neal and Wolf SILK Smoothing Blow-dry Balm

Neal and Wolf GLOW Super Shine Spray

Neal and Wolf Hold & Shine Spray

Standard hair grips

Pin Curl Clips

BaByliss 2285BU Hair Curling wand

1.            Getting texturised hair first with the ghd Air hairdryer. A 2,100W motor, an extra-long flex cord so you can move around on a job. It also has ‘advanced ionic technology’ that is designed to lock in moisture and keep your hair shiny and less frizzy. The one thing I love about my ghd Air is that it feels incredibly light to work with. Apply Neal and Wolf Silk Smoothing blow dry balm, then taking each section of the hair and blow dry with the ghd Ceramic Vented Radial Brush - Size 4. This will add texture and volume ready for the hair to be curled. You will find if you do this process first the curls will last for days.

2. For curled locks with staying power, always curl your hair in sections with the BaByliss Hair Curling wand and apply Neal and Wolf Guard to each section just before wrapping the locks around your curling tong.

3.  After curling a section of thehair, wrap the curl back up and pin it against the head using grips or pin curl clips pins and then continue to curl the rest of your hair. This will give the curls the chance to cool down while still in a curled shaped as well as giving volume to the hair.  Once you have curled and pinned the hair, leave the hair to cool for as long as possible to increase the chances of the finished result being a defined shape that will last. This is where I started to create the vintage make-up look.

4.  Finally remove each clip and let all the curls fall naturally. Then taking the ghd paddle brush gently brush from the root to the tip. This will make the curls look softer and natural. To keep the wave into the exact shape you are wishing to create, I use my Pin Curl clips to place into section I want a better wave especially at the front hair line. Set and add shine to the finish hairstyle with the Neal and Wolf GLOW Super Shine Spray, Hold & Shine Spray.

Karla’s Top Tips:

Curls that have been created with a large curling iron in large sections of hair tend to drop much more quickly than tighter, smaller curls. So if you want a curly look that lasts, separate your hair into small sections and create tighter, smaller curls.

Avoid touching, combing or brushing your curls once you’re happy with the way they look and your hairstyle is in place. Excessive fiddling with your curls will cause them to drop faster.

The final images from this photoshoot come out on the end of June. Keep a look out in Dark Beauty magazine.

Daniel Sandler’s Watercolour Blush!

There are creams, mouses, gels, tints, powders and watercolours available on the market for blusher. And I have a love for all blusher types for different skin tones, occasion and the look I am trying to achieve.

Watercolour blushers are however very new to the beauty market and the high street are a little behind on bringing out watercolour blushers, mainly because of the price! They are simply amazing at saving time, making blending easy and the waterproof formulation means that it doesn’t budge especially in summer hot days.

I am loving Award Winning Daniel Sandler’s Watercolour Blusher in shade ‘Passion’ - 15ml
At £14.50 each, available in 7 shades. They contain Vitamin E and Jojoba to enhance application and nourish skin. Silicone based, oil free, and doesn’t clog pores and suits every skin type I have worked on. The silicone makes it virtually rub-off proof plus waterproof whatever the occasion.

How to use:

*Always shake the bottle to mix evenly before each use.

*Squeeze out two very small drops of Watercolour on the back of your hand or in a makeup palette

*Using a duo tapered fibre blush brush such as the Crownbrush C427 and pick up the first drop of colour, apply to cheeks and blend and lightly buff into outwards movements

*To deepen the colour on your cheeks, re-apply a drop of colour to each cheek and blend over the top of the first layer

These blushes dry quickly but still allows you time to blend. The cheeks will have a sheer veil of colour look. Finally they last all day even on oily skin.

I have been using these a lot of for wedding makeup’s. A must in all make-up artists kits.

Make-up I did for Luke Woodford’s Abandoned Fashion Series Project in The Lake District- ‘Textured High Fashion’…

To continue Luke Woodford’s series in Lake District the abandoned building Luke took pictures in had beautiful old walls with lots of texture, moss, and peelings from old wallpaper. With the story in mind from Luke’s concept (which will be revealed once the images have been published) I created this high fashion textured look taking in the inspiration of the location and the story. As you can see from my design plan  to reality of me creating the look I would have to say this is one of my favourite make-up looks I have ever created, it was so fun to play with different textures in the hair, skin and detailed designs on the eyes.

Key products I used to create the look:

*Illamasqua Skin Base

*Crownbrush Eyebrow Palette

*Golden Rose Liquid Style Liner in Black & Black & Style Liner Metallic in Shade 6

*Lime Crime Uniliner in Quill

*We Are Faux lashes in Style Josey

*Ben Nye Essential Eyeshadow Palette

*Benefit They’re Real Mascara

*Kryolan Perfect Body Foundation Shade 00

*Kryolan Shimmering Vision Palette

*Kryolan Eyebrow Blocking- Spirit Gum, Cine Wax

*Daniel Sandler Invisible Veil Powder

*Concrete Minerals in Shades Napalm, Ember, Sabotage

Keep a look out for the final images in Dark Beauty Magazine in June.

A chance for you to come and learn from me at the next Luke Woodford Abandoned Fashion Series Project in France.

Part of the internationally published and exhibited ‘Abandoned Fashion Series’ project by photographer Luke Woodford.  I have been honoured to be the main Makeup, Hair and Nail artist to continue his project which most of his shoots I have been part of so far on this project will be published and making front cover of magazines in the next upcoming month. The best thing about this project is having the chance to build up and amazing team connection where I get to go along to amazing locations with other talented, passionate creatives mainly being photographers where they can experience these abandoned shoots with Luke and chance to learn lots and to also capture the moments on their lens! I can honestly hold my hands up high and say these have been some of my best photo-shoots I have ever done. The adventures alone are so fun and inspiring!

The last photoshoot took place in The Lake District there were 12 of us whom all travelled in a mini bus all being photographers and one of which was a make-up artist who also paid to come along to the experience, she got to learn and see it from a make-up artist’s point of view how these shoots take place too. This has now lead to a discussion with Luke this week who is happy for me to advertise I am going to be given the opportunity to one of my lucky followers to come and experience the next Abandoned fashion series project this time travelling to France to an abandoned building as well as shooting in Paris for a weekend in July! (My one dream place I have been dying to shoot)

After I posted about it yesterday on my Facebook and Twitter I had an over whelming reaction and didn’t expect so many people wanting to come along, therefore I think it’s going to be really tough to pick one person, but with some help and my guideline below I am sure I will get help to pick someone :) I am sure there will be more opportunities’ in the future for those that don’t come along to this experience this time. Please see below of the following guidelines to apply for this position and if you feel you tick all the below please do email me at karla_powell@hotmail.com titled FRANCE. I will be picking one person who ticks all the below, available on that date, from the UK, can make the payment and the team decide that is the suitable person for this trip. That person will be informed in less than a week’s time.

*Dates: There is no official date yet but 100% looking in July 2013 on a weekend. This will fall on Friday afternoon, most likely the pickup will be at an airport in the UK – London where we all meet which you will have to make your own way there to pick up, travelling all weekend in a mini bus to destinations (so make sure you don’t get travel sick) and bear in mind this is a very long tiring weekend which will be none stop as we are out there to get amazing images not a holiday.

*Passport: A valid Passport as we will be travelling in a Mini Bus on the Eurostar

*Team member: We are there as a team helping each other out, so willing to get involved and stuck into everything and not to be scared to arrive at an abandoned building- Last time I was climbing steep heels in snow and wind and had to go into a very scary building! So you do need a bit of a daring side to you ;)

*Make-up Artist: I will only be taking on trainee or professional make-up artists that have a passion, love and drive for make-up and is willing to assist me when needed.

Prices: The weekend will only cost £150 to be paid once you have been picked to join the team and this will guarantee your place, meaning first come first served. This includes the travel and Hotel (sharing room) only. You will need spending money for food etc all weekend.

These are our main requirements for now. Please do email me with an introduction to yourself and if you tick all the above and me and Luke will be picking a suitable person in less than a week’s time. If you don’t hear from me in a week’s time please note that you have not been picked to come along to this experience unfortunately , there will however be fall back lists in case that chosen person drops out or another space comes available.

Thank you everyone!
