Karla Powell Make-up Artist

Who are Golden Rose Cosmetics?

Golden Rose Cosmetics is a worldwide brand since 1983 found in more than 80 countries all over the world with Golden Rose Cosmetics launching in Malta in April 2006 and it’s only been the last year I have noticed a few make-up artists blogging and talking about Golden Rose and to be honest you can’t find a lot of information on the brand or even much blog posts on google,  I guess they are now trying to push it with bloggers as the brand is fantastic and so affordable for us make-up artists building kits up so more people are talking about it.  I have to say when I tried the liquid eyeliners from the brand I was so impressed and in fact my Black & Black Style liner from Golden Rose is favoured among all my liquid eyeliners in my kit now.

‘Quality products with reasonable prices’ has become the company’s motto from Golden Cosmetics. High branded products with fantastic colours, glitter, sparkle as well as the latest technology of Vitamin E and SPF 15 within their products.

I have swatched all the above metallic eyeliners which are £6.99 each as well as Dipliner £6.29 & Style Liner in Black & Black £6.99 (my favourite) These liners are a rich, creamy metallic colours with a thin brush for application which glides flawlessly on the lash line leaving behind a nice metallic glint on dry down. All have excellent pigment which I find last for hours with cracking or flaking especially The Style Liner in Black & Black! I actually haven’t come across a black liquid eyeliner that deliveries like this one, I love how it’s jet blog and has a slight shine to it, and not to mention staying put for hours. I actually used a mixture of this eyeliner and my Lime Crime Uniliners Quill for my latest Pop Art Inspired make-up look which I will be demoing at IMATS in June J

The liners do go “wet” for a few moments so do beware during application as it will smudge easily if you don’t allow it to dry completely. Once dry it seems to hold strong on me without flaking, smudging, or fading away! I just find all these faultless!

Illamasqua’s NEW Hydra Veil… What is it?

Unfortunately I couldn’t make it to Illamasqua’s NEW Paranormal Collection launch this month (the second launch I missed this year!!) However I have managed to read many different beauty bloggers/make-up artists reviews on the collection and scanned Twitter from the launch to keep up to date with the new collection which once again Illamasqua encourage self-express and with Paranormal it encourages individuals to unlock a new personal and creative journey with their new water resistant eye and face products, ultra violet nail varnishes and violet-hued two toned lipsticks which I will blog separately about. One thing from the collection I wanted to blog about today was their NEW Hydra Veil Rehydrating gel which everyone has been talking about.

Hydra Veil rehydrating gel has been known to ‘Create a radiant finish with Hydra Veil’s instantly rehydrating gel formula. It provides the optimal base for your make-up.’ Retailing at for £27 and comes in a 30ml tub. I have been testing this product every day since I got it and I have also used it this week on two models which made my Illamasqua Skin base go on effortlessly. So here is why I love it, its uses, how to apply and what Hydra Veil does:

*It comes with a little spoon for you to scoop the product out, much more hygienic than fingers which he smallest amount goes a very long way and looks professional when working on Models/Clients

*It completely stops foundation and makeup from creasing, fading, caking and separating. -It’s excellent if you have trouble with makeup creasing under your eyes or separating around your nose and works wonders with Illamasqua Skin base as It re-textures your skin, no matter how uneven it is. Foundation won’t cling to dry patches or blemished areas.

*It’s a jelly texture (reminds me of real jelly ) which can be used alongside your usual skincare routine, in between your serum and your moisturiser.

*It works because of tiny micro particles that can penetrate quicker and deeper into the skin to deliver the active ingredients deep into the skin cells. These then work to target visible signs of premature ageing: dark spots, lines and dull skin, delivering visibly younger, more luminous and ‘replumped’ skin.

* The Collagens within Hydra veil helps stimulate the production of elastin fibers to make the skin firmer and smooth.

*A water-based product, so use it with water-based foundations.

One thing which is like magic with Hydra Veil is when you chop up the jelly texture product and scoop what you need you need the most remarkable thing is that the rest of the product slowly reforms back into a smooth even state as you can see in the above pictures! Make-up is Science!

Have you tried Hydra Veil yet? If so what do you think? I actually think is going to become a cult products from Illamasqua!

The Beauty of Camouflage Makeup…

You may see Camouflage Makeup referred to by a variety of names such as cover-up Makeup or Medical Camouflage Makeup. Camouflage makeup is a high quality makeup specifically designed to conceal a variety of skin blemishes such as angiomas, rosacea, telangiectasia, vitiligo, skin discoloration, sun-spots, age spots, birth marks, acne, burn scars, stretch marks, scars, bruises, dark circles, freckles and tattoo cover-up which I did on my sister this weekend, something I do a lot on brides when they want their tattoos covered at weddings. My sister is off working on Disney cruises for 6 months and has to cover up her tattoo on her back and neck each day, so what better way to teach her with Veil Cover Creams, which I am loving using and was so impressed with their products. My sister needed an easy blendable product she can apply each day on herself, which is waterproof and won’t encourage more spots or any out breaks as applying an oil based product to your skin each day can cause outbreaks if you don’t apply a barrier cream first but Veil has been specifically designed to apply on your face each day with no outbreaks, which is fantastic if you want to cover spots/acne each day.

Camouflage creams were first developed by plastic surgeons during World War II to cover the burns received by fighter pilots. Nowadays men, women and children can use camouflage make-up to conceal abnormalities. Camouflage make-up can improve the quality of life, improving self-esteem and creates a sense of personal well-being! And this is why I fell in love with make-up at such a young age, I just love how make-up can make you feel and change the way you look instantly.

Although Veil will not restore your skin to an even texture, it will conceal discolouration and blend in with the surrounding unaffected skin to create a natural look when applied correctly. This type of makeup is thicker and more opaque with more pigment than regular foundation makeup. It effectively covers healed incision lines from surgery, scars, bruises and discolouration on your face or body. Veil Cover Cream is easy to use because it has a soft texture and spreads well and comes in a variety of shades to match the colour of the skin, and the texture of their products is so much better than normal camouflage make-up I have worked with, it reminds me of normal cream foundation which actually doesn’t feel thick and I find it blends beautifully and effortlessly.

Other benefits from using Veil Cover Cream:

*Veil is Waterproof. You can swim in Veil making it waterproof, so can also take extreme sweating and heat. Gently pat or air dry the camouflaged area when it becomes wet as rubbing with a towel will remove the camouflage.

*Veil is long lasting. It can remain in place up to 6-12 hours on facial skin and up to 2 days on the body.

*Veil creams can be easily mixed to provide a good colour match to all skin tones. They provide a white shade which can also lighten the shades if you need to make the shades real pale.

*Veil makeup can be removed and immediately re-applied with no adverse effects.

How to use Veil Cover Cream:

*Veil should always be applied to clean, dry skin.

*Cleanse the skin using a good cleanser such as Veil Cleansing Cream.

*Preferably remove any remaining oil from the skin by using a good toner such as Veil Toning Lotion.

*Apply Veil Cover Cream thinly over the blemish with your fingertips using a patting motion - do not rub in – or you can use a latex or a beauty blender sponge – and blend the edges on to the natural skin. Alternatively you can use Veil Cover Cream as an all-over foundation.

*The last and vital step is to set with Veil Finishing Powder which not only completes the waterproofing but also makes Veil virtually smudgeproof. Apply the Finishing Powder liberally and press in gently using a dry cotton wool pad or powder puff. Remove any excess Finishing Powder by dabbing with a dampened cotton wool pad.

*Your blemish will now be fully camouflaged. Like all new techniques you may need a couple of attempts to perfect the process, but just keep trying with it.

NEW Kryolan Lip N’ Cheeks!

Many of you will know I am a big fan of Kryolan so anything new and exciting they bring out I am straight their testing the products, and like always they never disappoint me. Their newest product Lip N’ Cheek is a multi-purpose product available in 11 shades, from beautiful nudes to bolder hues, they all create a soft subtle hint of colour to the cheeks, lips and even eyes!  It is also water resistant, making it ideal for hot days, oilier skin and for waterproof locations when working on set.

Packaged similar to a lip gloss, with an angled applicator for ease of use, you get 10ml of product in each tube which is packaged in their new design and logo- ‘Make-up is a science’. The formula is smooth enough to easily blend using fingers onto the cheek area, yet applies precisely to instantly stain the lip area, I also love to use my Syntho brushes from Crownbrush to apply for a smooth even application, however you only really need to use your fingers as it blends effortlessly without any tools.

My favourite shade out of all these three has to be Lotus! It’s such a beautiful pink girly shade which I think will be one of their best sellers as it pretty much matches most skin tones.

Kryolan Lip N’ Cheek are £16.50 each availbale from Charles Fox. Check out Kryolan’s NEW Website too!

Do you use a stainless steel palette on your make-up jobs?

They are considered a Pro Essential. Whether you’re mixing cream-based or liquid makeup, holding excess product, or applying on the skin, this kind of palette is always durable and good for a bustling shoot schedule. It’s the bridge between your professional makeup products and your client’s beautiful face. This is from Crownbrush 613 7Pc HD Set which comes with six make-up brushes too. The palette has enough room to put moisturiser, foundations, concealers, gel liner, eyelash glue, lipsticks, and glosses on the palette and comes with double ended mental spatula to pick up most of your products to place on the palette.

I do tend to use the back of my hand a lot for my palette however when I am mixing up a lot of products this palette comes out to play. I simply wipe it down and place back in my make-up kit and take home to clean for the next shoot/event.

What do you use?
