Karla Powell Make-up Artist
Is it a drawing or is it make-up? That is the question I want people to ask when they see my Pop Art Inspired Make-up Series… I wanted to create an illusion!

After my amazing response for posting my first Pop Art look here is my second Pop Art Inspired Make-up Image from my ‘Pop Art Inspired Series’, I love this one as you can see the body painting that was created my Deborah Love on the neck and chest from Follies Face. There are more edited images from this series to come! I can’t wait to demo this at IMATS London on The Crownbrush stand.

Why I Love Diamond DX Paints…
Diamond FX Face Paint is based in the Netherlands, and they are famous for their line of colours and ideal consistency for layering and blending when applying the paints for body/face painting looks as well as eye work and lip work which I have discovered when experimenting with them that’s why I fell in love with their range.
For those that work with face paints The Diamond FX Face Paint range they have normal colours to metallic colours that are very opaque and shimmery, great for line work! If you haven’t tried their rainbow cakes before, Diamond FX has a great selection of small and large cakes to add beautiful blended colours and speed with every brush stroke.
Diamond FX Neon Face & Body Paints will have your makeup designs looking like a work of art! The range of fluorescent colours come alive under nightclub UV lights due to the pigmentation being so strong! So if you are after a pink this bright (This is Shade: Pink from www.dauphines.co.uk ) I recommend purchasing! They simply activate by adding water… You need to get the consistency right for flawless application so make sure you practice and use synthetic brushes to apply to the skin.
Diamond FX paints can be purchased in the UK from www.dauphines.co.uk or www.thefacepaintingshop.com

A sneaky behind the scenes picture from my Pop Art Inspired photoshoot…

With the lead up to Yesterday’s Pop Art inspired photoshoot which I will be demoing at Paintopia and IMATS I posted an image of a Pop Art inspired make-up look where I practiced on myself, something I always do before any make-up jobs. I can’t believe the response I got on the image, and to get over 500 likes I was overwhelmed. So here is a sneaky behind the scene image of the total look created at the shoot!
I can’t wait for you all to see the final images!

New Aqua Paints shades from Superstar…

Lately I am using a lot of Superstar Aqua Paints to create my body/face painting and creative eye looks and was super excited to discover they have three new additional shades in the collection so wanted to share them with you as soon as I got them- They are just so beautifully pigmented!

Superstar paint is a very new brand to the UK and is manufactured in Holland. Superstar paints feel so gentle on the skin, and comes in a vibrant range of colours and a great price to match too which are all under £4 depending on the size you get!! The shades I have swatched here are all 16gr size in Flash Green-142, LaLa Land- 237 and Posion green-210 all of which are a matte finish. With an amazing creamy blend of extreme pigment, smooth consistency as soon as you add water to the product they go onto the skin so easy without cracking and flaking and long lasting!

How to use Aqua Colours(for those who have never tried them)?

Aqua colour is a glycerine-based compact make-up, mainly for colour intensive, with the ingredients of superior-quality skin cream. Aqua colour is applicable, and is used for make-up for painting face and body. The application is effortless, with an only slightly moistened make-up sponge or synthetic brush. I love to add MAC Fix + to activate my aqua colours. Aqua colours are also known to be smudge-proof and can be easily removed with soap and water and very child friendly on the skin meaning not many people have reactions to them. Using Aqua colours can take time and practice to get the texture  right before application, however once you  get used to them you can use them to create any looks- even high fashion looks for TV, photography work.

Superstar face and body paints can be purchased from www.thefacepaintingshop.com

Behind the scenes at my Snow Queen of Sweets Food Project photoshoot!

Here I am creating the body painting make-up look I created on the Snow Queen of Sweets Food Shoot with Lush Cosmetics in shades success, motivation and focus. Kryolan Silver Tinted Moisturiser and finally adding Kryolan Glamour sparks in a variety of colours.

My Top Tips to applying body glitter:

*Focus on your look and the kind of design you are making. This will help you to decide the type and amount of glitter required and size-loose glitter, fine glitter, large textured glitter and how this will capture under lights and photography.

*Use small amount of glitter and take your time with application and spread it evenly on all the exposed parts of your body. Sprinkle it gently and apply it evenly with a powder puff, or with the help of a soft makeup brush like Crown .

*Finally as a make-up artist working with glitter on photoshoots do warn and plan the look with the photographer as different lighting and cameras will be needed or the glitter effect can be lost once captured and this would be such a shame when you spent so long and spent money creating the look.

NEW Illusion by Charles Fox Body Painting Brushes & GIVEAWAY

I have always been a big fan of Illusion magazine since starting make-up artistry and had the first setoff Illusion body painting brushes which had a pink handle and I still use them from today, so you can imagine how excited I got when Illusion announced NEW and improved range of body painting brushes, so I wanted to share my review on these wonderful brushes and a chance for you to WIN a set too!(Scroll down the bottom of this post to see how to enter

Illusion brushes by Charles Fox have created beautiful brushes to achieve great results designed with a lot of attention to detail. From the smooth handle to the hardwearing bristles, some with sable for bristle flexibility for ease of painting, some synthetic to be hard-wearing. And they have now been finished with bright aquamarine handles. There are many options of how you can buy these brushes from individual purchases to the whole set with a brush holder making it affordable for all.  I am amazed at the brush holder they come with as it turns into a brush holder stand, this is perfect for how I work as I like my brushes to be in a holder up right rather than flat down so I love this little extra feature they have added to the collection.

There are 13 brushes in the collection has an acquamarine with a clever name for each-so basically describing what each brush does. The collection includes fine liners, large body brushes and some special shapes: rake, dagger and filbert. All the brushes in this collection are perfect for face painters and body painters and as well as doing detailed face art for close up photography work. In the above picture as you can see I got very excited to play with my new brushes in order to review them and test them out. So here is some pictures of me testing out the NEW Illusion brushes with Kryolan Aqua Colours:

Creating gradient skin with the Dream Blend brush

Creating different effect with Fun Fur, Lush Line, Easy Line, Vital Line, Edge Me brushes

Creating quick petals and flowers with the Perfect Petal brush- Also great for creating teeth effects at Halloween!

The finished mess after having fun with my NEW Illusion brushes! :)
