Due to me recently working away in Egypt on a music video with Violina who have collaborated with Birgit Oigemeel on the music video which was filmed on luxury yacht along the Red Sea Egypt- so this involved lots of heat, water, sweat and many scenes being filmed in and out of the sea. So lucky for me after getting lots of tips of other well-known make-up artists such as Jos Brands and from The Charles Fox team on ‘how to’ to use makeup underwater with the right brands.
*Keep the make-up strong & bright
*Keep everything well defined
*Contouring and highlighting
*If using false lashes make sure they are natural hair
Kryolan Dermacolor DC Camouflage Cream Palettes– which comes in 24 colours in order to contour highlight and match the models skin tones, it’s a highly pigmented foundation which needs to be activated to blend effortless on the skin, I used Kryolan NEW make-up blend and then fixed using Derma Color Fixing Powder and Fixing Spray it will be waterproof and protects the skin against damaging UV radiation. DC Camouflage could last even under extreme conditions like swimming, heat and physical strain. Dermacolor Camouflage Cream is available in an extensive range of shades and those are intermixable which gives the make-up a natural appearance when applied correctly.
My favorite brand and palettes to use is Kryolan and three palettes I did everything I needed out in Egypt were the Metallique metallic pigments, Shimmering Vision palette, Interferenz grease paint paletteand the Neat Kit lipstick setand all these are excellent for layering up and can all be used on eyes, cheeks and lips, It stays on and gives excellent colour payoff- Any oil based products won’t move underwater. If you want to use Mascara then do use a waterproof one, however from experience this has been known to smudge so you can eyelash tint before the shoot. Finally a great eyeliner to try for underwater shoot is Make-up Forever AQUA LINER- High Precision Waterproof Eyeliner. Also keep with natural hair false lashes. Sometimes water on synthetic lashes will change the shape of the lashes (think about when your eyes water/cry- Have your false lashes ever changed shape? If you experienced that , then you will know why to keep with natural hair)
Finally to remove greasepaint/waterproof makeup you will need to use and oil based remover to break down and gently dissolve the makeup. I always use Kryolan’s Hydro Makeup remover oil. It is hydrophilic cleansing oil which will remove all cream and grease make-up. Massage into the skin and rinse with warm water, the model can do this in the shower.
Kryolan Official is now based in London Covent Garden in Charles H Fox where you can purchase Kryolan products. *Inspired by Nicola Johnson Waterproof Make-up experience.
Alien Make-up for The Music Video in Egypt using Face Lace for Make-up Artists!
This season is all about face lace- All make-up artists are talking about them and using them and this is all thanks to Phyliss Cohen- A celebrity make-up artist that has worked with Annie Lennox, David Bowie and Steve Strange and more! When designing my make-up looks for the music video on the three girls from the band Violina who have collaborated with Birgit Oigemeel for her next Summer 2013 song we had a creative alien theme to work with and therefore I wanted an amazing instant make-up effect on the girls without the professional time and expense as working on this music video there was not much time for any free hand work as all three girls had to look the same with an effective design in a short amount of time.
Face Lace was exactly what I needed to create the looks. They are quirky ready-to-wear make-up designs with fifteen intricate designs to choose from that can be applied in under a minute and are re-usable (I used the same designs over three days) the range of laces includes ornate masks that simply adhere to the skin, eye laces that flatter the eye with graceful lines or elaborate silhouettes as well as mehndoodles, which can be placed wherever you choose, and playsheets of small patterns which allow you easily to invent your own Face Lace designs. I used spirit gum to apply my designs to the girl’s eyes as the girls had to be underwater for their scenes so I wanted them to stay put.
I think this is an easy option to create beautiful looks for make-up artists, however it is being used a lot now in make-up artists portfolios so I guess it’s about thinking out the box how to use them to keep them looking different from other artists works such as layering up the different designs or even applying different colours and textures underneath the lace. They were perfect for this music video and I will be certainly using them again in the future.
Working away doing make-up in Egypt on a music video with Violina and Birgit Oigemeel!
Myself , the stylist & hairdresser –Joey Bevan and Make-up artist Kate Blackmore were hired as the creative team to work with Birgit Oigemeel - an Estonian singer who was the first winner of Estonian Idol Eesti otsib superstaari and Violina who are a group of 3 pretty Estonian violinists, performing on electric violins to create a music video for a collaboration song of Birgit and the girls which will be released in summer 2013. We also created a promotion video for Seven Spices and Citizen TV which I will be blogging about once the video is released and Citizen TV is launched.
This has been amazing 7 days so far working on the most luxuriously yachts available in Egypt moving around the Red Sea- M/Y Seven Spices to film many different locations on lagoons, desserts and in the sea which required many water sport activities and the team having the chance to learn scuba diving and swimming with the dolphins which was beautiful and amazing experience all captured for a creative music video.
Come and see what we got up to over the last 7 days in Egypt in pictures:
