Adult Acne! A Common But Frustrating Problem! My Experience & My Tips To Help…

It’s no secret that I’ve suffered with bad skin since I was young. I feel this is a great time to do a blog post on my skin. Mainly because how it has affected me through my years of growing up and still affects me from today, and I am hoping this blog post on my experience can help you have clearer skin and make you feel more confident in your own skin. My skin affected me in many different ways and even to this day, I know it has had an impact on me that I believe will stay with me forever. I would say alongside the other reason why I got into make-up, this was one of the main reasons I fell in love with make-up. I loved how I could hide and disguise any imperfections on my face with a little bit of foundation and concealer. Make-up to me was a mask and still is today.

Back in Feb-March I couldn’t look at my mum in the eye with no make-up on, my skin was the worst it had ever been and my confidence rapidly shattered. I couldn’t bare the pain of waking up each and every morning, walking into the bathroom, not turning the light on, looking into the mirror and having to look at my acne-ridden skin which all came on from a change in my job and other stress related problems I had earlier this year.  Some days were better than others. With the more make-up application to hide the acne, avoiding meetings, avoiding going out and even turning down make-up jobs.  With the push from my mum I finally plucked up the courage to see my doctor hoping that this new cream or tablet that the doctor had given me would make me back to “normal”, that’s all I wanted; to have perfect skin! After all being a make-up artist you have to look your best especially when you preach so much about perfect skin!

With acne or skin problems, you wear the condition on your face, the first thing that people see is your face. What do people see? They see, lumps, bumps, pigmentation, scars, redness, they see an unhappy face! Unless you are a make-up artist like me and can try to hide behind it all which I did.  As human beings we thrive to connect with people, to be accepted and be part of a group. Having acne makes you feel excluded. The amount of parties, jobs, family days, nights out, chances to meet new people and photos that I missed out on in the time I had these skin problems was dreadful. I remember looking around constantly scanning people’s skin with my eyes to see if they had a single blemish, that way I could somehow connect with them; I then wouldn’t feel left alone, and I guess this was hard for me as I work with so many flawless models in the industry I work in.

Many people don’t understand what it’s truly like to have a bad skin condition, it changed my life. Adult acne is partially caused by sebum, an oily substance produced by sebaceous glands in the skin. There’s not one definitive explanation why people get acne over time, it may be hormones, sometimes medications, stress. Unfortunately it’s really common in your twenties and sometimes into your forties. In some people it comes and goes, in some it’s continuous.

After plucking up the courage to see my doctor, changing my diet, keeping stress free, change of make-up and other factors I feel my skin has improved so much, where I feel more confident in my skin. I still have scars and pigmentation and do wear make-up every day to hide those small imperfections. I am now happy to share some of my tips, secrets and products I have used to improve my skin over the last few months. I really hope this blog post can help those that suffer from bad skin too. I look forward to hearing all your feedback on my experience.

Skin Care:

Prescription medications: Low-dose antibiotics, such as doxycycline, can help reduce inflammation in the skin thereby reducing breakouts. Oral contraceptives and spironolactone, can help stabilize the fluctuations of hormones, which is often a major contributing factor to adult-onset acne.  This is something I had prescribed by my doctor so I can NOT advise here. I would suggest meeting up with your doctor to discuss your personalised skin problems

Cleansers: Mild cleansers without fragrances can be helpful to cleanse the skin, but not strip the skin of natural oils.  Have been using Temple Spa –‘Way To Go’- £18, Cooling and oh-so refreshing. This cool, refreshing rinse-off gel will remove grime, makeup and excess sebum. Which also targets problem oily skin areas.

Finally I use Bioderma Sensibio H2O-£11.36 to remove eye make-up and other stubborn make-up. It’s a liquid cleanser/make up remover. Using Bioderma purely as a quick and effective make up remover, not really a cleanser as such. And that is exactly what it is. Quick, easy and to be quite honest…bloody amazing at removing your make up without leaving any break outs on your skin, this product also comes onto all my make-up jobs. The micelles contained in its formula effectively micro-emulsify impurities while maintaining the skin’s balance (soap-free, physiological pH).

Creams and lotions: Retinol products can open and clean pores and simultaneously help reduce fine wrinkles. Products that contain salicylic and glycolic acids are helpful to reduce discoloration and fade old acne marks. Perfect for moisturising the skin and acts as an amazing make-up primer too is the Temple Spa ‘Moisturise To Go’ -£33. A Liquid silk for the skin. It is designed to bring balance and soak up excess oil. A moisturiser without feeling heavy.

Don’t forget those eyes:  I love Origins GinZing- £23. Such an amazing Refreshing eye cream to brighten and depuff the eyes. Ingredients include Caffeine from Coffee bean, Panax Ginseng, Magnolia Extract and natural optic brighteners rapidly wakes up, refreshes and restores radiance to tired eyes. This is why Origins skin care is a must for me! I love all their natural ingredients.

Exfoliate: Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, leaving your skin radiant and smooth. Exfoliation is the cosmetic practice of removing dead skin cells from the epidermis, the top layer of the skin. Your skin can shed 30,000 to 40,000 dead cells per minute naturally; however, many people need exfoliation products to help reduce acne and get smooth skin. Temple Spa ‘the Power Breakfast’-£22 is a nutritious scrub and face mask in one, with honey, oats and fruit juices. It gently dissolves dead skin cells and for any skin type needing a polishing scrub and/or a skin softening mask!

Keep Stress Free & Sleep: Stress and lack of sleep can raise the level of inflammatory markers in your body, which can affect your skin and make it prone to infection and spots. When you are stressed your body produces cortisol. Cortisol ramps up the processes that help us deal with stressors, like converting protein to energy and releasing glycogen, and suppresses peripheral processes like digestion, cell regeneration and endocrine regulation. With nasty symptom results of fatigue, weight gain, depression and acne.

Make-up: It got to a point where the more I tried to hide my acne, the more acne I had to hide!  There was also a problem where I was using the wrong foundation. There is no need to stop using makeup to conceal your acne, you just need to start choosing the right types of cosmetics; ones that won’t cause more breakouts. I would now be lost without my Perricone MD No Foundation Foundation- £47. A traditional foundation without the heavy matte finish, which emphasises the tiniest skin imperfections.  No Foundation Foundation is a multi-purpose product that provides natural translucent coverage, corrects skin undertones, instantly smoothes fine lines and boosts skin’s natural moisture throughout the day, all the while delivering antioxidant benefits! Read more >here<

Water: Drinking water keeps your skin cleansed and hydrated, encouraging clear, fresh skin. By drinking water you flush out toxins and eliminate the dirt that clogs the pores of your skin, giving you a healthier glow.

Diet is Important too!  There is no evidence that a poor diet directly causes spots, but voiding foods that are high in refined carbohydrates like white bread and pastry, can improve your skin. So ensure that you are properly hydrated, get lots of fibre in your diet in the form of whole grains, pulses, fresh fruit and vegetables, and consider taking a daily antioxidant supplement.

Food Ideas for Perfect Skin-

Carrots:

Think of them as orange wonder wands-good for eyeballs, good for clearing up breakouts. Credit vitamin A. It helps prevent the overproduction of cells in the skin’s outer layer.

Dark Chocolate:

Antioxidants in dark chocolate, reduce roughness in the skin and protect against sun damage.

Green Tea:

When it’s hot, the bionic brew releases catechins, a type of antioxidant with proven anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. (The tea’s antioxidants start to degrade as it cools, so drink it while it’s hot.)

Sweet Potatoes:

Loaded with vitamin C, which smooths out wrinkles. Vitamin C is essential to collagen production and the more collagen you have, the less creased your skin looks.

Hot Water & Lemons:

Start the day out with a mug of warm water and the juice of half a lemon. It’s so simple and the benefits are just too good to ignore. Boosts your immune system, Balances pH, Helps with weight loss and clears skin. The vitamin C helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes. Lemon water purges toxins from the blood which helps keep skin clear as well.

Final Top Tip! Natural Product- Use Lemon and Honey for Clear Skin…

Take a half lemon from the fridge and put 3-4 drops of honey on it. Rub the lemon on your face, emphasizing trouble areas. Leave the lemon and honey mixture on your face for 5 minutes and then wash it with cold water. You will be able to see the results immediately. Additionally, lemon juice will also fade other marks/spots on the face and honey will moisturise.

Thanks for taking your time to read this blog post. It took up some courage for me to write this and share my experience with bad skin. I would love to hear your experiences too. Please remember that these are products and ways I have helped improve my skin, your skin might not get along with these products. Either way I hope it can help some of you. No Foundation Foundation with SPF 30!

Foundation and tinted moisturisers are the key to a polished makeup look especially if I am working on a model with perfect skin and I don’t want to ruin their skin with thick coverage. I know a lot of makeup newbies who are scared of looking too made-up and avoid foundation. Gone are the days of heavy, cakey makeup; now brands are focused on natural, effortless finishes that make your skin look its best and I try my best to have a range of types of foundation in my kit to suit all skin types and looks I am aiming to create.

As a dermatologist to some of the most famous faces in the world, their special needs often become inspiration for the creation of new products.  When more than one celebrity make-up artist asked Dr. Perricone for a type of foundation that would let the skin’s natural radiance and beauty shine through, No Foundation Foundation was born from Perricone MD.

Created to keep skin looking dewy and flawless, this unique formula delivers many benefits of a traditional foundation without the heavy matte finish, which emphasizes the tiniest skin imperfections.  No Foundation Foundation is a multi-purpose product that provides natural translucent coverage, corrects skin undertones, instantly smoothes fine lines and boosts skin’s natural moisture throughout the day, all the while delivering antioxidant benefits.

“I took special care in formulating No Foundation Foundation with a non-chemical SPF 30 to deliver protection against sun damage, making it ideal for all skin types, even the most sensitive” – Dr. Perricone

The Benefits of using Foundation No Foundation:

*SPF 30

*Lightweight and suitable for all skin types.

*healthy, dewy finish.

*Corrects skin undertones, smoothes fine lines and boosts skin’s natural moisture.

*Paraben-free.

Unfortunately it only comes in one shade. Women of a wide skintone range could pull this off, but I can imagine those on either end of the spectrum won’t be able to use this product.

It gives you a no foundation look yet protects the skin, has anti-aging benefits and gives a little tint to even out the skintone. Once you conceal and place translucent powder the skin looks glowing and dewy!  I do only use this for clients who have amazing non pigmented skin as it doesn’t really cover imperfections such as redness and pimples. So I would then opt for a thicker foundation if the skin has imperfections. It’s perfect also if you are on holiday or just don’t like the foundation look.

It costs £47 which is very pricey, however comes out for my best make-up jobs and not all models I work on suits this foundation due to their skin types and skin tones so I am happy to only use this foundation on special occasions. Check out the full Perricone MD No Makeup Makeup range >here<

Do you use a stainless steel palette on your make-up jobs?

They are considered a Pro Essential. Whether you’re mixing cream-based or liquid makeup, holding excess product, or applying on the skin, this kind of palette is always durable and good for a bustling shoot schedule. It’s the bridge between your professional makeup products and your client’s beautiful face. This is from Crownbrush 613 7Pc HD Set which comes with six make-up brushes too. The palette has enough room to put moisturiser, foundations, concealers, gel liner, eyelash glue, lipsticks, and glosses on the palette and comes with double ended mental spatula to pick up most of your products to place on the palette.

I do tend to use the back of my hand a lot for my palette however when I am mixing up a lot of products this palette comes out to play. I simply wipe it down and place back in my make-up kit and take home to clean for the next shoot/event.

What do you use?

NEW Make-up Images for Choulachou London NEW SS13 Lookbook!

I was very excited to work with one of my favourite photographers on this job- Ryan Handy, who I work with a lot on different shoots. There were lots of images from this shoot, however these two are my favourite that I had to share in today’s blog post. Choulachou is a NEW young design label, based in London where they collaborate with talented illustrators who design their unique and imaginative prints. Choulachou collections mix fashion and art into unique accessories that expresses individuality.

For Choulachou Look book we kept the makeup and hair girly and fun for each design to keep the continuity of the look throughout. The scarves are carefully crafted combining great style and quality to become the perfect expression of anyone’s personality so I wanted to keep the make-up simple where the scarves and the models personality had the chance to shine through.

Visit to Superstar in Amsterdam!

Superstar paint is becoming a new brand to the UK where The Face Painting Shop introduced me to the range and the brand is now only distributed in the UK by them and I am proud to say Superstar are now my official Sponsor for my make-up jobs when I need to use the paints. Superstar is manufactured in Holland – Oosterhout where I was lucky enough to be invited to the factory with The Face Painting Shop yesterday to meet the owner Marco Van Leenep. It was a chance to learn more about the brand, meet the people behind the brand and to see how Superstar paints are made- which like when I went to Kryolan’s factory last year I was truly fascinated of the effort goes into making these paints.

I have been using face paints since I started make-up and they are great for creative make-up and even beauty make-up too! I have had lots of years working with face paints now and I have finally mastered how to get the right consistency when using them for body painting work all the way to beauty work. If you haven’t tried water/cream Superstar paints before I suggest buying a few primary colours and experimenting. I have even used the paints to create some of my lip art looks!

Superstar actually started out as a bakery in the 1920s then after the Second World War the company decided to produce Make-up! Superstar’s oldest employee is 71years old with the rest of the staff working there for over 18 years + This was very obvious in the work space with an amazing family business atmosphere, you could feel the passion behind their work towards the brand just by meeting and seeing them work and in my eyes this helps to make the brand who they are and to keep up a high standard. We got told by some of the staff they can make up to 1500 + Superstar paints between two of them in a day… And yes all handmade! Madness.

Superstar is a fantastic paint that is so gentle on the skin, is great in the heat, and comes in a variety of vibrant colours and a great price to match too! Superstar also sell their own eyelashes, contact lenses, false nails and fake facial hair which we watched them making wigs.

I feel more of a connection towards Superstar now and I am really grateful and appreciate the opportunities I have with such wonderful brands like this experience. A huge thank you to Marco from Superstar and Nat at The face Painting Shop for this wonderful inspiring day.  Superstar products can be purchased from www.thefacepaintingshop.com

NEW MAC Face & Body Formula in 50ML…. Finally!

Finally MAC have changed the formula of their Face and Body and now comes in a handy siz of 50ML for us make-up artists on set(because I would always have to transfer mine into a smaller bottle) It’s moisturising, buildable and gives a beautiful sheer coverage. It has been always the must have product for all MUAs and will always remain so. They will eventually fade out the old formula and replace the new formula with 50ML size and 100ML. Face and Body is best for people that do not need full coverage. The formula is great for naturally evening out complexions while simultaneously allowing the skin to still be visible and beautiful.

What’s in this formula?

It’s water-based,water-resistant ,  anti-oxidant-rich liquid foundation which goes on smoothly for a natural-looking wear. Ideal for all skin types.  The long-lasting formula is available in a wide range of colours and contains several emollients to help moisturise and condition the skin. It delivers professional looking results that meet the exacting standards of beauty photography and is ideal for perfecting the face and body, and shouldn’t give so many people reactions to the product. My old face and body formulas I only really use on my models legs and body. So I feel more confident to use these on my models faces now.

What shades are available?

C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C7, N1, N2, N3, N5, N7, N9

How much and when can I get the NEW Face & Body 50ML?

You can get this formula NOW! And will cost you £20.50!

I think this was a very smart move from MAC which I am now excited about collection the shades. The colour shown in the above picture is the lightest shade for pink undertones- N1.
