Karla Powell Make-up Artist
Is it a drawing or is it make-up? That is the question I want people to ask when they see my Pop Art Inspired Make-up Series… I wanted to create an illusion!

After my amazing response for posting my first Pop Art look here is my second Pop Art Inspired Make-up Image from my ‘Pop Art Inspired Series’, I love this one as you can see the body painting that was created my Deborah Love on the neck and chest from Follies Face. There are more edited images from this series to come! I can’t wait to demo this at IMATS London on The Crownbrush stand.

Glamour Summer Nails…

With the sun starting to shine in England I finally believe we might have a nice summer and what better way to celebrate that by adding a sparkly glam look to my nails with some of my favourite nail varnishes in my collection using Illamasqua’s ‘Harem’ from The Broken Heart collection and Models Own NEW Artstix Duo polish using the glitter section from the duo polish in shade ‘Blizzard’.

I applied Harem to the base of the nails which is a very blue-based pink crème.  Like a bubble-gum pink with a twist with lavender-tone when applied it’s neither too thick nor too thin, and flows over the nail easily.

This is a real fun combination and would be perfect on both the fingers and toes in summer, but instead of applying ‘Blizzard’ over the entire nail base colour I decided to try out applying it to just the tips. You only need one coat, meaning this was a super quick manicure. Just really girly, summery and glam!

Hope you are inspired.

NEW! Models Own Artistix Duo Polish

Models own have released their amazing NEW Artistic collection.  And the NEW “Artistic Duos” polishes are everything I love to have in my nail collection – bright, fun, girly and glittery!  They have coordinating 8 of their best selling base coats with 8 of their best selling top coats retailing for £6 sold on www.modelsownit.com or at Boots stores nationwide April 17th 2013.

The shades they have in the range:

*Snow Mix (Snow White and Ibiza Mix)

*Pink Stuff (Pastel Pink and Hot Stuff)

*Jade Flakes (Jade Stone and Snowflakes)

*Freak Betty (Freak Out and Betty Blue)

*Utopia Ocean (Utopia and Indian Ocean)

*Boogie Dream (Boogie Nights and Lilac Dream)

*Blibble (Blizzard and Bubblegum)

*Nude Jack (Jack Frost and Nude Beige)

How do they work?

Begin with the ‘Paint It’ colour base and apply to all fingernails. Let this fully dry then switch to ‘Cover it’ to add a sparkly finish to your nails. Both the shades can be worn alone and you can always mix and match the collection if you own all of them and feeling daring.

*Above I have Freak Betty Applied.

“It only reveals itself upon intimate inspection”.

Part of the internationally published and exhibited ‘Abandoned Fashion Series’ project by photographer Luke Woodford.  I was honoured to be the main Makeup, Hair and Nail artist to continue his project but this time in Belgium. The best thing about this project was the team I went along to Belgium with- Talented,  passionate creatives! I can honestly hold my hands up high and say this is one of my best photo-shoots I have ever done. The adventure alone was so fun and inspiring.

Some of you were following the lead up to this photo-shoot where I created and shared the make-up looks and nails I made ready for the shoot, so to finally show you it all in action above is so exciting- The images were took by so many different talented photographers which came along to the shoot, I can’t thank them enough capturing the moment and being able to share it with you all.

Inspiration behind the Make-up:

I witness so many make-up artists looking at other make-up artist’s work- And to be honest a lot of people will either copy or actually can’t design and create their own ideas! I find sometimes by looking at other artists work it can be distracting from designing your looks. So for this look I wanted to do something that I have NOT seen anywhere or any other artist do- and I would say this is down to visualising the look in my head(mainly before I sleep), sketching ideas and being inspired by the designer’s garments we used in Belgium- Malgorzata Dudek! Luke trusted me with 100% control of the looks which gave me more of a chance to be as creative as I can be. Looking at the dresses which had spider patterns and a highly dramatic intricately detail, I took the pattern designs from the silks and laser cut metal elements with a vision of high fashion make-up & hair look with spiky patterns which are a secret message, “It only reveals itself upon intimate inspection”.
